Two peaks rise straight from the sea like a gate. They frame a valley so steep and green and ancient it looks like it belongs to another time entirely. Below them: São Vicente. A church, a bridge, a black sand shore. The Atlantic pushing in hard from the west.
Seen from the water, the Vale Imperioso is Madeira's most dramatic approach — a geography so imposing it gave the valley its name. This aerial view shows the full scale of it. The mountains do not apologise for themselves.
