The old ER101 clings to the cliff face above a churning Atlantic. Narrow, winding, carved into basalt in an era before tunnels made it unnecessary. In winter, waterfalls fall directly onto the road. You drive through them. There are no barriers between you and the drop.
The Estrada do Norte once connected São Vicente to Boaventura, to Ponta Delgada, to the whole rugged north coast — a route so dramatic it became iconic long before anyone called it scenic. The tunnels carry the traffic now. The old road stays. Abandoned sections. Hidden viewpoints. Cliffs going straight into the sea.
