The path disappears into the laurisilva. Twisted ancient trees form a cathedral overhead. A bird of paradise burns orange against the green. The levada runs beside you — water that has irrigated this island for five centuries, still moving, still cold, still perfect.
Madeira's levada network is one of the engineering wonders of the Atlantic — 2,200km of hand-carved irrigation channels threading through UNESCO World Heritage forest. This design captures the São Vicente section: dense, humid, and unlike anywhere else on earth.
